Roman Slavery
Slaves were very important in Rome, because without them, the wealth of Rome wouldn't have be able to have the life styles that they did have. Some people were born into slavery, if the father needed money, then he was able to sell there oldest child, if people were captured in war, they were sent back to Rome to be sold, also if they were born into slavery, they were to be slaves. If a slave was bought, they were to be a slave for the rest of his/her life. The only way that the slave that was bought was to be given freedom was if their owner had given them the right to be free. If you were a slave and you had a child, then usually that child was automatically going to be a slave. Some paents killed their children so that they wouldn't have to deal with being a slave. Some people thought that this was cruel, but the parents just didn't want them to have to go through this horrible life experience. About 25% of people in Rome were slaves. Sometimes, very rich people would own over 400 slaves, but emporers, they may have over 20,000 slaves. Some slaves main jobs were to work for someone non-stop. Some people would just think of it as just a maid, but they could bet them, or even torture them if they didn't do something right. To be a slave was one of the worst thing ever. Anybody could be a slave. Woman, men, and also little children.
These are people who are being taken into slavery. They have no choice but to go. Sometimes if they refused to go into slavery, they could either torture ou or kill you. So most people would just go through being a slave. Other people would risk being torchured and/or die then have to go through being slave, but being slave is not as always as bad as you would think. Yes, it is still pretty bad, but sometimes they were just a house slave, but there were definently people who were treated horrible!
